Tips For Not Crashing Your Drone

Tips For Not Crashing Your Drone

As you begin to fly your drone, you will likely find yourself in scenarios where crashing your drone is a very real possibility. Not only are obstructions all around us, but certain factors such as other aircraft and birds can especially pose a threat if you aren’t paying attention. With the right knowledge and preparation, we can better prepare ourselves to avoid crashes. Our friends at Sky Watch have analyzed thousands of commercial drone flights, and they have been able to see which factors were common among various drone crashes. So here are some tips to help you avoid crashing your drone!

1 - Have A Good Plan

A good plan before you fly is crucial to having a safe flight. If you have no goal in mind, you will be more vulnerable to a crash. It is important that you have objectives before you get your drone in the air, even if that’s just a few simple thoughts in your mind. To help you define your objectives, ask yourself these questions.

-What angles will I fly my drone?

-How many images, or video clips will I capture?

-How long should my video clips be?

-How many takes will I need?

2 - Adjust On Site

Now that you have a plan, you are on the right path. However, as we mentioned there are potential risks on site that can happen during your flight. It will be good to briefly review these questions (and others applicable to your area) once you get on site to fly.

-Was there a nearby accident or emergency situation that would affect your ability to fly safe?

-Have any new NFZ (No Fly Zones) been added?

-Do you see any birds flying nearby?

3-Take Off/Landing

It is important to remember that the most dangerous part of any flight is the takeoff and landing. This is because during these maneuvers, you will be most vulnerable to environmental hazards such as people, trees, cars, etc. Hence, it is very important you are aware of this so you will be able to better respond in case a situation arises that would require quick action.

4-Practical Actions That Will Help

Now there are a few practical actions you can take that will help you avoid a scenario that could end in a crash.

-Make sure your drone and remote batteries are fully charged!

-Make sure you calibrate your GPS.

-Make sure you are connected to at least 4 satellites.

-Make sure your SD card is in, and has enough room to record.

-Make sure you have a clear space for take off.

These reminders will make sure you are ready to fly, and are in a good position to avoid a crash. Remember, YOU ARE IN CONTROL! Some environmental factors and tech malfunctions may be out of your control, but ultimately, you are in control of your Mini 2!
